The Minnesota Paranormal Study Group had been founded in 2005, and Justin had done so many investigations with the group that he would be hard pressed to give an actual number if asked. There had been many memorable cases: Palmer House in Sauk Center, William A. Irvin ship in the Duluth harbor, The Old Train Depot in Duluth, and the Greyhound Bus Museum in Hibbing. He’d seen three full-bodied apparitions with his own eyes and gotten photographic evidence from two locations – the St. Augustine Lighthouse and a sugar plantation, both in Florida. He’d had objects thrown at him, heard disembodied voices, and he’d never felt the worry that he felt right now.

It wasn’t fear, but this case was different from all the others in that it was personal. Something here had frightened his wife and made the place that was meant to be their home someday, their sanctuary and refuge, into a place where she didn’t feel comfortable. If Justin could fix that then he needed to. They’d invested so much in this little lakeside haven. Not just money, but dreams. So many dreams. He had to take away whatever taint Ali’s experience had put on the place so they could resume their dreaming.

At least he hoped he could. Ali often worried that Justin might bring some kind of spirit home with him from an investigation, so the notion that something was already waiting for them at the lake had unnerved her more than he’d ever seen, and more than he’d wanted to admit to the other members of the group. Even Justin’s stepson had been affected. Normally the toughest of skeptics, his mother’s apprehension seemed to have infected him as well.

So, Justin had agreed to set up this overnight investigation to ease Ali’s mind. If he found nothing, he knew that she may be placated but would never be a hundred percent at ease here, so he actually hoped to find some evidence of a benign spirit or one that simply needed assistance moving on.

If he found anything with a more sinister purpose for lingering here…well, he’d cross that bridge if he came to it.
